At JICEF (Japan International Cultural and Education Foundation), we are passionate about empowering the younger generation to build bridges across cultures. On June 25th, we were honored to support a remarkable, student-led intercultural event held at a university chapel, designed and organized by an international student from Turkey.

The heart of this gathering was centered around preparing and sharing a traditional Turkish Ashure Dessert. By bringing students and faculty members together to cook this unique dish, the event created a natural, welcoming environment for deep discussions about multicultural coexistence and peace.

The Ashure Dessert: A Metaphor for Harmony

The Ashure Dessert, often referred to as "Noah's Pudding," carries a rich historical legacy. According to tradition, it was first created by the survivors on Noah's Ark, who combined the last remaining ingredients on the ship—such as grains, legumes, dried fruits, and nuts—into a single, nourishing pot.

Various ingredients such as dried figs and apricots prepared in bowls for making the traditional Turkish ashure dessert.

What makes the ashure dessert so incredibly special is its composition. It incorporates a wide variety of distinctly different ingredients, yet rather than losing their individual identities, they complement each other to create a perfectly balanced and delicious flavor. This makes the dessert a beautiful, edible metaphor for a cohesive society: diverse individuals coming together to create a harmonious community without losing their unique cultural heritage.

Cooking and Conversing for a Better Tomorrow

During the hands-on session, participants chopped fruits and stirred the large pot together. The collaborative cooking process naturally sparked engaging conversations that transcended language and cultural barriers.

The international student who organized the event shared a profound perspective: they wanted to give local students a tangible experience of what it truly means to live alongside people from different backgrounds, moving beyond just reading about other cultures.

This sentiment was echoed by the Chairman of JICEF and the Director of the university's Christian Center, who both emphasized that acknowledging and celebrating our differences is not a source of division, but rather the very foundation of global peace and cultural enrichment.

As everyone sat down to enjoy the sweet, comforting taste of the finished ashure dessert, the room was filled with a shared sense of unity. JICEF is incredibly proud to support these meaningful cultural initiatives and will continue to champion programs that inspire mutual respect and global harmony.
